America vs. Maldives

The United States and Maldives are both countries which stamped out the British to gain their respective independences. Since then, what have either acheived?

  • According to the CIA Factbook, the Maldives has nurtured 11 industries.
  • The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) lists some 1170 industries in the United States.

Given that:

  • The Maldives has been independent for 41 years and,
  • The US has been independent for 230 years

It is surprising that:

  • The Maldives versus US industries ratio is 1:106, while
  • The ratio of the period of Independence enjoyed between Maldives versus US is 1:5

Does the phrase 'blown out of proportion' come to mind? In this case it's literal, don't you think?

As you've been posting these types of comparisons and contrasts 'arguments' for a while now, I think it's time you do some reading (or revise) on logical fallacies.

the word 'anonymous' becomes you, my friend. not only aren't you trying to be clever and subtle, but you're completely undermining your own intellect. i commit fallacies when i lie or deceive. i'll leave it up to the rest of the readers (ones who don't fancy the institution as much) take a look at the 'types of comparisons' i've posted here and judge for themselves whether they're being deceived.

ps. is there even a question of logical incongruency?

persona non grata: Sorry if my earlier comment appeared a bit unproductive to you. I was trying to emphasise what seems perhaps false-cause type fallacies in some of your writings. In this latest case, it seems - at least to my mind - you've tried to correlate socio-economic status with 'independence', while there are other relevant factors or causes for socio-economic status. It's also relevant to note that some post-colonial states had become politically less conducive to socio-economic development with some regimes having very harsh dictatorships, among other things. During colonial era, some of these countries had more vibrant economies. So, 'independence' is a fluid and perhaps meaningless term.

A comparison or contrast from without can be very misleading. For example, the ratio of wealth between those economically most well-off and those in the baseline in the Maldives and in other developing countries might be same as that of developed countries like the USA. However, with such figures one might mislead others of the reality of these economic groups.

ps. I appreciate your blog.

anonymous: independence to me means to be devoid of the need to seek help. being independent as a country means to be devoid of dependencies on other countries (i know you're going to lament about how dependent we still are, but that indeed is the reality we would like to change eh). once a country is independent, its governance becomes responsible for its development. whether the institute in question has way too much power or not is a question to be asked by its constituency. if the institution becomes overpowering, the constituency has the right to force the issue of amendment. one would presume that a government's achievement is a consequence of understanding and undertaking its responsibilities, while heeding the needs of its constituency. a government that does this best would stand to achieve the most in a shorter period of time. in much more human terms: the more you eat, the more your arse huge-ifies.

gaanagaa: that's what we need in the maldives; effect through simplicity.

All Maldivians know of America. 99.9999 Maldivians hate America.

99.9999 percent of Americans do not know of Maldivians.

And the few that do know, they love Maldives.
You maths guys please get this love/hate thing into a workable formula please.
